Nearly a year after a rare neurological condition was diagnosed, Billy Joel is on the mend. In a recent interview with Hello! magazine, Christie Brinkley, the former wife of the legendary singer, shared encouraging news about Joel’s health. The 76‑year‑old musician, who has been battling normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), is reportedly doing very well and is actively engaged in a comprehensive rehabilitation program.

Understanding Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus

Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a condition in which cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) accumulates in the brain’s ventricles, creating pressure that can disrupt normal brain function. Unlike other forms of hydrocephalus, the pressure readings in NPH are often normal, which is why the condition can be difficult to diagnose. Symptoms typically include gait disturbances, cognitive decline, and urinary incontinence—often referred to as the classic triad of NPH.

Diagnosis usually involves a combination of neurological exams, imaging studies such as MRI or CT scans, and sometimes a tap test to assess how the brain responds to fluid removal. Treatment often centers on surgical intervention, such as the placement of a shunt to divert excess fluid, coupled with physical therapy and lifestyle adjustments to manage symptoms.

Billy Joel’s Journey to Recovery

Joel’s battle with NPH began almost a year ago when he first began experiencing subtle changes in his balance and memory. After a series of tests, doctors confirmed the diagnosis, and a treatment plan was set in motion. The singer has since undergone a shunt procedure and has been diligently following a regimen of physical therapy, dietary changes, and regular medical check‑ups.

According to Alexa, Joel’s daughter, he has been attending physical therapy sessions on a regular basis. She noted that he has lost weight as part of his diet plan, which is a key component in managing NPH symptoms. “He’s so resilient and committed to being healthy and proactive,” Alexa said. “He’s a fighter—he’s always been a fighter, and he talks in his documentary about how life’s like a fight.”

Christie Brinkley, who was married to Joel from 1985 to 1994, expressed her pride in her former husband’s progress. “He’s doing very well,” she told Hello!. “I was out of town, but otherwise it was so wonderful.” Her supportive words underscore the importance of a strong support network in recovery from a complex neurological condition.

Family Support and Public Tribute

Joel’s family has been a pillar of support throughout his treatment. In addition to Christie Brinkley, his current wife Alexis Roderick (43) and their daughters Della Rose (10) and Remy (8) have stood by his side. Joel also shares a close bond with his daughter Alexa (40), who has been actively involved in his care and advocacy.

Just before Joel’s public tribute at Carnegie Hall, Alexa performed “This Night” for her father during the “The Music of Billy Joel” event on March 12. The performance was a heartfelt moment that highlighted the deep connection between father and daughter. “She was so excited to be able to perform for him,” Brinkley said, adding that the concert was a joyous occasion for the family.
