How the Tradition Began
The practice of photographing the royal children on their birthdays started with the eldest, Prince George, on his first birthday in July 2014. The young prince was photographed by photographer John Stillwell, who described the toddler as “very lively, very confident and very sure of himself.” In the image, George is seen in a pair of denim overalls from Petit Bateau, a navy polo shirt, and matching leather shoes—an outfit that set the tone for the family’s future birthday shoots.
From One Birthday to Many
Since then, the family has continued to mark each child’s special day with a new portrait. Princess Charlotte arrived in May 2015, followed by Prince Louis in April 2018.
