Academy Award nominee Michelle Pfeiffer has opened up about the grueling conditions she faced while filming the Paramount+ series The Madison, created by Taylor Sheridan. The 68-year-old actress described the challenges of shooting in rural Montana, where the production team embraced a back-to-basics approach that left little room for modern comforts.
Life Without Modern Amenities on Set
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Pfeiffer painted a vivid picture of the production’s logistical hurdles. “There is no bathroom. Even the outhouse is not real. There’s no AC, there’s no plumbing, there isn’t anything,” she revealed. Despite the lack of basic facilities, Pfeiffer praised the location’s natural beauty, calling it “breathtakingly beautiful” and “glorious.”
The actress explained that the remote setting required significant adjustments for the cast and crew. “It took a while [to adjust],” she said. “It was all a little bit rushed for everyone. So there weren’t certain things, sort of accommodations, set up. We didn’t really have trailers there because they were shooting 360 [degrees], so they couldn’t have a bunch of trailers around. So there really was no place for us to sit.”
Challenges of a Rugged Filming Environment
Pfeiffer detailed the physical demands of working in such an isolated location. “There was no bathroom nearby. There was no food. In the winter, it was cold [and] it was like, ‘Could we have a heater?’ And in the summer, it was like, ‘Could I get an umbrella because the sun’s really intense?’” she added. These challenges highlight the stark contrast between the show’s idyllic Montana backdrop and the reality of production life.
- No access to modern bathrooms or plumbing
- Lack of air conditioning and heating units
- Minimal on-set facilities due to the 360-degree filming setup
- Extreme weather conditions affecting daily operations
The Madison: A Family Drama Rooted in Rural America
In The Madison, Pfeiffer stars as Stacy Clyburn, the matriarch of a family relocating from New York City to Montana after the death of her husband, Preston Clyburn. The ensemble cast includes Kurt Russell, Matthew Fox, Patrick J. Adams, and Beau Garrett. The series, part of Taylor Sheridan’s expanding Western universe (which includes Yellowstone), explores themes of family, legacy, and the complexities of rural life.
Pfeiffer’s role as Stacy places her at the center of a story grappling with grief, identity, and the challenges of starting anew in an unfamiliar environment. Her previous work with Sheridan, including roles in Wind River and Hell or High Water, has demonstrated her ability to bring depth to characters navigating harsh realities.
