These personalized AI assistants can streamline your workflow, save time, and enhance productivity. If you’re new to the world of Custom GPTs, you might be wondering how to create one. Fear not! We’ve got you covered. This guide will walk you through the process, from start to finish, and even include a step-by-step video to help you along the way.

When I first wrote about this eight months ago, I was trying too hard. It’s easier than I thought back then. So we’ve updated this article and today we are sharing a new way to make a custom GPT that you can use almost without typing.

A process-focused custom GPT starts with your best prompts. It’s actually an evolution of your best prompts. In fact, it’s the evolution of any workflow in the AI era.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="A flowchart shows the evolution from manual business processes to custom GPT automation through ad hoc AI tasks and reusable prompts." class="alignnone wp-image-53402" height="316" src="https://ww... width="1000" />That’s the transformation. The manual done-by-hand process is supported by one-shot prompts (AI for tasks). Then those prompts get tested and improved, becoming reusable prompts (AI in the workflow). Then finally, those polished prompts get combined into an automation like a custom GPT (AI as a tool).

It’s not just the next step in your process, it’s the next step in your AI skillset. You already know how to make prompts. Today you’ll learn to transform those prompts into automations.

In a hurry? Skip to minute 4:40 in this step-by-step video and watch me make a custom GPT in real time:

Please accept statistics, marketing cookies to watch this video.

Note: We’re showing how to make custom GPTs within OpenAI’s ChatGPT, but you can use this same method to make Gemini Gems, Claude Projects or Copilot Agents. There really is no difference.

Why build a Custom GPT?

If the task is done more than twice, or if your process that has multiple steps with involving multiple ad-hoc prompts, you have an opportunity to make a little tool with big benefits:

Custom GPTs are easy to reuse and share
Use them anytime; share them with anyone. You need a paid account (ChatGPT Plus) to create one, but the people you share it with don’t need anything at all. Just the link. Once they click it, they’ll see the custom GPT in their left-side menu. They click it there or just typing the @ sign in any prompt.

Custom GPT standardize your best processes
Standards are good for quality, performance and efficiency. When you codify a process within an automation, your best practices are built into the tool. Custom GPTs support the high-skilled workflows of less-expert users. They are reusable tools for repeatable systems.

Make one that does something you’re already very good at. This is your opportunity to turn your personal expertise into codified best practices.

Step 1: Decide the goals, inputs and output

Let’s plan. The first step in building anything is to define the goal. Because we’re building an AI automation, we’ll also define what the user gives it (inputs) and how the AI responds (outputs). I’ve borrowed this little framework from AI pioneer, Christopher Penn. The examples are from the custom GPT I built in the video above.

Define the goal
What’s the purpose of this automation?
Example: Auditing donation pages to improve conversion rates.

Define the inputs
What does the GPT need to do its job? Does it need a simple link? Or a screenshot? Or an uploaded file?
Example: A screenshot of a donation page.

Define the outputs
What kind of results should it generate?
Example: Gaps, recommendations, emotional triggers and conversion ideas.

Step 2: Improve your prompts

First, get your prompts ready. These are the building blocks for your process GPT. Bet Respond: title (no prefix), blank line, article. English only!

Identify Your Best Prompts

Start by identifying the prompts that you use most frequently and that yield the best results. These are the prompts that you rely on to get the job done. For example, if you’re a content creator, you might have a prompt that generates SEO-optimized blog post ideas. If you’re a marketer, you might have a prompt that analyzes competitor websites.

To find your best prompts, look at your workflow. What tasks do you repeat regularly? What prompts do you use to complete those tasks? Write them down. This will be the foundation of your custom GPT.

Test and Iterate

Once you’ve identified your best prompts, it’s time to test them. Try them out in different scenarios to see how they perform. Are there any prompts that consistently yield better results than others? Are there any prompts that you never use because they don’t work well?

Based on your testing, iterate on your prompts. Refine them to make them more effective. This is where you’ll start to see the real power of custom GPTs. By continuously improving your prompts, you’re creating a tool that gets better and better over time.

Document Your Prompts

As you test and iterate on your prompts, make sure to document them. Keep a record of what works and what doesn’t. This will not only help you improve your prompts but also make it easier to create your custom GPT later on.

Think of documentation as a roadmap. It guides you through the process of creating your custom GPT and ensures that you don’t miss any important steps.

Step 3: Combine Your Prompts into a Custom GPT

Now that you have your improved prompts, it’s time to combine them into a custom GPT. This is where the magic happens. By combining your prompts into a single tool, you’re creating a powerful automation that can handle complex tasks with ease.

Choose a Platform

The first step in combining your prompts is to choose a platform. There are several platforms available that allow you to create custom GPTs, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Gemini Gems, Claude Projects, and Copilot Agents. Each platform has its own strengths and weaknesses, so choose the one that best fits your needs.

For example, if you’re looking for a platform that offers a wide range of features, OpenAI’s ChatGPT might be the best choice. If you’re looking for a platform that’s easy to use, Gemini Gems might be a better option.

Create Your Custom GPT

Once you’ve chosen a platform, it’s time to create your custom GPT. This involves a few simple steps:

Log in to your account
Log in to your account on the platform you’ve chosen. If you don’t have an account, you’ll need to create one.

Create a new custom GPT
Once you’re logged in, create a new custom GPT. This will typically involve clicking on a button that says something like “Create a new custom GPT” or “New GPT”.

Add your prompts
Add your improved prompts to your custom GPT. This will typically involve dragging and dropping your prompts into the custom GPT interface.

Test your custom GPT
Once you’ve added your prompts, test your custom GPT to make sure it’s working correctly. Try out different scenarios to see how it performs.

Share Your Custom GPT

Once you’re satisfied with your custom GPT, it’s time to share it. Most platforms allow you to share your custom GPT with others. This is a great way to collaborate with colleagues or friends and get their feedback.

To share your custom GPT, simply click on the “Share” button and enter the email addresses of the people you want to share it with. They’ll receive a link to your custom GPT, and they can use it just like you do.

Step 4: Use and Maintain Your Custom GPT

Now that you’ve created your custom GPT, it’s time to use it and maintain it. This involves a few simple steps:

Use Your Custom GPT

Start by using your custom GPT in your daily workflow. Try it out on different tasks to see how it performs. Are there any tasks that it handles particularly well? Are there any tasks that it struggles with?

Based on your experience, make any necessary adjustments to your custom GPT. This might involve adding new prompts, removing old ones, or refining existing ones.

Maintain Your Custom GPT

Over time, your custom GPT will need to be maintained. This involves a few simple steps:

Update your prompts
As you gain more experience with your custom GPT, you’ll likely discover new prompts that work particularly well. Add these to your custom GPT to keep it up-to-date.

Remove outdated prompts
Conversely, you might find that some prompts are no longer useful. Remove these from your custom GPT to keep it streamlined.

Test your custom GPT regularly
Regularly test your custom GPT to make sure it’s still working correctly. Try out different scenarios to see how it performs.

Conclusion

Creating a custom GPT is a powerful way to automate your workflow and save time. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can create a custom GPT that meets your specific needs and improves your productivity.

Remember, the key to a successful custom GPT is to start with your best prompts and continuously improve them. By doing so, you’ll create a tool that gets better and better over time.

So what are you waiting for?
