John Ottman, best known for his work as an editor on the Oscar‑winning Bohemian Rhapsody and the recent biopic Michael, has taken the helm as director of Billy & Me. The screenplay is being penned by Adam Ripp, while a team of producers—though not yet named—has secured the green light to begin pre‑production. The film’s premise centers on Joel’s early days in the New York music scene, the discovery of his talent by manager Irwin Mazur, and the rise that would eventually lead to worldwide acclaim.

Despite the star power behind the project, Joel’s camp has issued a stark warning. In a statement released to the press, Joel’s representative said: “Since 2021, the parties involved have been officially notified that they do not possess Billy Joel’s life rights and will not be able to secure the music rights required for this project.” The statement went on to add that the artist has not authorized or supported the film in any capacity, and that any attempt to proceed without his consent would be both legally and professionally misguided.
